Affiliate Marketing – Amazon Associate Link

Setting up an affiliate link with Amazon is straight forward just go to:

A few things surprised me about the program. 1) There is a limited time you can remain in the program if you are not generating sales. I am doing this from memory but I believe you have to “sell” three items in nine months to stay in the program. So I have probably joined a little early as I do not yet have a well established following. 2) Amazon have a extensive but limited number of countries where you can be paid by Bank Transfer (Minimum Earnings $10.00) All other countries payment is made by check, (Minimum Earnings $100.00) Neither of the countries I operate out of are on the list; Vietnam, no surprise there, and Singapore which did surprise me.

Check out Amazon’s Bounty Programs. For example if you are blogging about maternity items, there is a $3 bounty if you get folks to sign up for Amazon’s baby registry.

Amazon’s affiliate program is not going to make you rich. $300 per month is a target for folks with a good following. But over a year that amounts to $3600 which could pay for a nice vacation,

To promote a product that is sold on Amazon – find the product in the Amazon store. Then use the SiteStripe bar at the top of the screen to select Text Image or Text+ Image. I prefer Image as that allows me to add my own description of the item.

You can select the image size, I find the default of medium is fine. Copy the HTML Text

To add the link to a WordPress site. Choose Group add HTML and paste. You will see a paragraph similar to the one on the left

Select preview to see how the image will appear on your site.

Note not all WordPress plans support image+text so if you are experiencing difficulties pasting an image+text link, try pasting just an image link. I waste quite some time until I recognized the problem

A final note on affiliate marketing, if you are receiving affiliate income you should always disclose this fact to your readers, listeners or viewers. This is not only good form; in many countries it is a legal requirement. To sum up the US Federal Trade Commission: Essentially, whenever a link is used on your website that results in a commission, you must disclose this information to site visitors. This extends beyond affiliate links, and must also be done for endorsements, sponsorships, etc. There are some other requirements such as the disclosure must be close to the trigger point. Even if you live in a country that does not require you should consider following the FTC guidelines. The US authorities have extensive reach beyond the US boundaries and by putting stuff out on the web you are by default doing business globally. Want to know more Ctrl+Click here.
